Supersonic deposition of Nanostructured surfaces

The main scientific and technological objective of the project is the production of nanostructured coatings with thickness in the order of 100µm.
To realize these coatings, a new supersonic cold deposition technology (Cold Gas Spray) is employed to spread reactive nanostructured powders and make them adhere to suitable substrates, and avoiding the degradation of the projected materials.
The use of materials of different kinds as alloys, ceramics and composites, will allow to avoid damaging of surfaces, to improve wear resistance, chemical inertness and to develop a new class of tribological materials.
The developed materials will be employed into three demonstrative applications:

  • development of high performance bearings for aeronautics;
  • new advanced coatings for the mechanical fields;
  • new biocompatible coatings for medical devices.
